We are incredibly blessed to be in a state like South Australia. It’s not just the picturesque city of Adelaide, South Australia, but we’re also spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor locations for family photography, from green rolling hills to sandy beaches. To red rock cliffs to serene parks and historic landmarks, Adelaide has it all. I’ve compiled a list of 25 of the absolute best outdoor locations in Adelaide for capturing heartwarming family or engagement memories.
1. Semaphore Beach
A busy coastal option with historic charm and a laid-back atmosphere. A great option if the kiddos want ice cream and to explore the jetty.
2. Botanic Gardens of South Australia
I love shooting here. It’s all about the lush greenery, vibrant blooms, and peaceful ponds of these stunning gardens.
3. Mount Lofty Botanic Garden
A hidden gem nestled in the hills, offering a tranquil setting for family photos amidst native flora.
4. Himeji Gardens
Such a unique option. The serenity of Japanese-inspired gardens with calming water features.
5. Cleland Conservation Park
Capture moments with native Australian wildlife amidst the scenic natural beauty.
6. Tennyson Beach
A local favourite, this is a popular option for for family photographers because of the sandy dunes and green shrubs.
7. Port Adelaide
This is such a unique one, and I wish more people chose this one. The streets look like something right out of Europe. Let’s go explore the historic streets and waterfront for an urban family photoshoot.
8. Mount Osmond Lookout
Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Adelaide from this elevated location.
9. Maslin’s Beach
This one is so perfect for couples and maternity, or young families who don’t mind their surroundings. The cliffs surrounding the white sand make for a perfect backdrop, as well as blocking out wind.
10. Belair National Park
A picturesque location with numerous walking trails and picnic spots for the family. One of the most beautiful spots in South Australia in my personal opinion.
11. Carrick Hill
A historic estate with enchatnting gardens and captivating atmosphere. This one also has a cafe, stay afterwards and enjoy a coffee.
12. Wittunga Botanic Garden
A hidden gem with diverse plant life and serene walking trails. The perfect spot for family photography here in South Australia.
13. Port Noarlunga
A stunning coastal spot down South, with dramatic cliffs and rock pools for unique family photos.
14. Al-Ru Farm
One of my favourite places in South Australia, I recently did my Motherhood Mini’s there earlier this year. Keep in mind that Al-Ru Farm is a private property and you can’t just show up, but if you seek permission, it’s so worth it!
15. Adelaide CBD
There are soooo many cool spots within the Adelaide CBD. We are so blessed with old architecture whether it be the University buildings on North Terrace or the Adelaide Town Hall.
16. Blackhill Conservation Park
Sprawling green hills (in Winter), and bushy walking trails. Talk about serene.
17. Veale Gardens
Just another gorgeous city garden option, right next to the Himeji gardens. Some beautiful hills amongst lots of trees on South Terrace.
18. Mount Barker Summit
A hilltop location with sweeping views of the Adelaide Hills.
19. St Kilda Adventure Playground
Perfect for playful family photos with colourful playground equipment. A sure way to get genuine smile from the kids.
20. Myponga Reserve
A little far from town, probably one of the most Southern options listed here. One of my clients told me about this beauty, and we photographed their engagement there. So peaceful and quiet with lots of wildlife.
21. Cobbler Creek
A popular option for families who are looking for a field backdrop. Perfect for picnics.
22. Anstey Hill Lookout
Another popular option in the hills! Such a gorgeous view with sprawling hills
23. Port Willunga Beach
Every time I shoot at Port Willunga, I always see another few family shoots going at the same time. And for good reason, this backdrop is one of my absolute favourites.
24. Hahndorf
There are so many gorgeous options in this quant historic town, did anyone say strawberry picking?
25. Glenelg Beach
One of the most busiest beaches in South Australia. This is great for families that want an activity packed family session - ice cream, ferris wheels, swimming, and fishing off the jetty. So much fun!
